She was a guest on SuicideGirls Radio earthier this month, and was so astoundingly on-point about sex and sensuality, that I couldn’t help but probe her some more. She’s been in hundreds of adult films, played William H. Macy’s wife in heat in Boogie Nights, and appeared on Oprah in defense of blue movies; but what stands out most is her eloquence. And, I think they’re responsible for freeing animals locked up in unfair and archaic laboratories for animal testing and giving out free kits on ‘how to become a vegetarian’ but I’m not totally sure. Know why? Because the hoopla and mixed reviews about their in-house politics, the real agenda of founder Ingrid Newkirk, and their divisive demonstrations, staged around nude women covered in faux blood and wrapped up like meat in life-size styrofoam trays, upstages good intentions and honestly, gives all vegetarians a bad name.

Recently, those quirky root vegetable lovers over at PETA thought it might be fun to show the unexpected side- effects of your boyfriend going vegan, in their “BWVAKTBOOM” campaign. Well, the result is massively off target. To quote Nerve.com writer Virginia Smith, “As it stands, this “boyfriend went vegan” campaign just makes me want to run and hide in the arms of a safe, flaccid carnivore.”

The new ad begins with a voice-over narrating “Jessica’s” current circumstance:

“This is Jessica. She suffers from BWVAKTBOOM. Boyfriend Went Vegan, And Knocked The Bottom Out Of Me. A painful condition that occurs when boyfriends go vegan and can suddenly bring it like a tantric porn star.”

Unfortunately, PETA tried to placate to a Maxim, FHM crowd, but instead alienated and offended millions of viewers, as proven by their almost 100% dislike rate on YouTube. Showing a woman that resembles a sexual assault victim trudging upstairs in so much pain she can barely walk — her girly parts obviously sore — and donning a neck brace, no doubt, then smirking at her boyfriend as if this was somehow enjoyable is beyond poor taste. It’s pathetic.

Supposedly, a newfound vegan diet provides a sense of clarity and sensitivity to those around you. I think it’s time PETA walked their talk.

This Sunday (Feb 19) we’re having a women’s writers’ retreat in the SG Radio Studio with a love junkie and a woman trapped. Hosts Nicole Powers (SG’s Managing Editor) and Darrah de jour (SG’s resident post-feminist sex and sensuality expert) will be joined in studio by Love Junkie author and Writers on Fire coach Rachel Resnick and her frenemy, actress, comedian, playwright and author Lauren Weedman, a.k.a. Horny Patty (we’re told by Rachel that she had that nickname prior to her “cameo” in HBO’s Hung!). The two met online on a UCLA Book Proposal Writing course, and have been unhealthily competitive ever since. We therefore expect the claws to be out and the sparks to fly, so it should be a fun show.

When Darrah’s not steering the conversation towards the topic of porn or polyamory, and Nicole’s not banging on about Occupy, ACTA or the freakin’ NDAA, we’ll be more or less on topic, yakking about writing. That’s right. Writing. Like, books ‘n’ shit. Stories. Sketches. Plays. Real writing. Surreal writing. Automatic writing. Manual writing. And ghost writing. Since doing this shit is hard. Very hard. Like if you’re JK Rowling rich, fuck it, you should just pay someone else to do it and go get your nails done. Really. But if you’re not, and you’re embarrassed to let people even read your diary – not because it’s too juicy or cringe-worthy, but because it’s too dull – tune in to find out how to make boring shit sound fun, shameless stuff shameful (in a good way), and how to plain just make cool, uncool, and awesomely wrong stuff up.
